When you’re laying in bed postpartum with your newborn on your chest, maybe practicing skin to skin, you never expect that little infant to wiggle off you and fall. This traumatic moment became a reality for one of today's guests, Hayley Mullins, two weeks postpartum.
This week is Newborn Falls Awareness Week and it’s important for us to realize that newborn falls are much more common than we hear about. Hayley was so empowered to make a change, after having trouble finding a product that would work, that she created a prototype in 3 weeks, which is now called the Joeyband for clinical use and the RooLoop for retail. Hayley and her co-founder, Sarah-Almaza Cox are on the show today to share what can we do to protect our baby from falling postpartum? What is skin to skin? What are the benefits? …and so much more!

For today’s guest, Jessica Patoka, the loss of one life and the birth of another are celebrated the same time every year and it’s impossible to know how she overcame such polarity of emotion at the same time. She shares with us the tools that keep her grounded and how she practiced presence during such a challenging time. By hearing Jessica’s story, we will find comfort knowing that we can experience loss and grief at the same time of great joy and discover solid ground again. We will learn the importance of taking care of ourselves throughout motherhood.

After going through postpartum with twins and a toddler at home, Valerie Trumbower fully understood the overwhelm that can come with the start of motherhood. Now, as a postpartum doula, it is her passion to educate, support and empower parents when they first bring their baby home. She has worked with hundreds of families to set up systems and routines that make the postpartum journey much smoother.

For Elizabeth Presta, no matter what level of planning and preparation she did for her pregnancy and birth, her plans still derailed and she still was left feeling emotionally empty. That picture of becoming a mom was not at all what she expected and she instantly started to question and judge herself.
We have a lot of assumptions about our pregnancy, birth, postpartum and life in general as a mother. We paint a picture in our minds, but what if it looks like a VERY different picture than the one we dreamt?
